Plain English first. This policy covers data collected through The App diver research survey. We collect only what we need, share it with no one, and delete it when it is no longer needed. The sections below explain each point in detail.
What we collect
When you complete The App research survey, we collect:
- Survey responses — your answers to all questions in the survey, including open-text responses about your diving habits, safety experiences, and opinions on the product concept.
- Your name and email address — only if you voluntarily provide them at the end of the survey to receive a beta invitation. These fields are explicitly optional.
- Response metadata — the date and time your survey was submitted, and the device type used (collected automatically by Typeform). We do not collect IP addresses or precise location data.
We do not collect any payment information, government identification, or sensitive personal data beyond what you choose to share in open-text fields.
Why we collect it
The data collected through this survey is used exclusively for the following purposes:
- Product research. To understand how recreational divers find dive partners, the frequency and nature of buddy-finding problems, and attitudes toward safety and solo diving.
- Persona development. To identify distinct user groups within the freediving, spearfishing, and scuba diving communities and ensure The App product serves their actual needs.
- Feature prioritisation. To make informed decisions about which features to build first based on real feedback, not assumptions.
- Beta outreach. If you provided your email, to contact you personally with an invitation when The App beta opens.
Your data is never used for advertising, profiling for commercial purposes, or any purpose not listed above.
Who sees your data
Only The App founding team. Survey responses are accessed solely by the product team conducting this research.
Typeform (survey platform). Responses are stored on Typeform's servers as the survey is completed. Typeform processes data as a data processor on our behalf under a Data Processing Agreement. Typeform is GDPR-compliant. You can review Typeform's privacy policy at typeform.com.
We do not sell, rent, share, or disclose your data to any third party, advertiser, data broker, or partner organisation.
How long we keep your data
- Survey responses are retained for 12 months from the date of submission, then permanently and irrecoverably deleted.
- Name and email addresses provided for beta access are retained until the beta programme closes, or until you request deletion, whichever comes first.
- Anonymised and aggregated insights (e.g. "72% of respondents have cancelled a session due to lack of buddy") may be retained indefinitely as they contain no personal data.
Your rights
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable national data protection laws, you have the following rights:

Legal basis for processing
We process your data under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR — Legitimate Interests. Our legitimate interest is conducting product research to develop a safety-oriented platform that serves the recreational diving community. We have assessed that this interest is not overridden by your fundamental rights and freedoms, given that:
- Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary.
- You were personally invited and have a clear expectation of what the data will be used for.
- Name and email fields are optional — no personal contact data is required to complete the survey.
- Data is not shared, not used for commercial profiling, and is deleted within 12 months.
For the optional contact data (name and email), we additionally rely on Article 6(1)(a) GDPR — Consent, which you provide by voluntarily completing those fields after reading this notice.
